Chipmunk Flight Experience Oxfordshire

Book a Chipmunk flight out of Bicester and you will be flying in a piece of history! Between 1949 and 1996 the Chipmunk enjoyed a career as much-loved trainer to air cadets and trainee pilots in the RAF. This is one of those planes that occupies a special place in the hearts of many a pilot – and here’s your chance to find out why.A more than worthy replacement for the RAF’s previous training plane the Tiger Moth the Chipmunk was originally designed by de Havilland’s Canadian subsidiary. This actual Chipmunk serial number WB549 was the very first to be built in the UK in 1949 – and proudly displayed at the Farnborough Air Show later that same year. As you can imagine it was a revelation with clean lines excellent handling and amazing aerobatic capabilities too.In fact the black and white pictures that you can see above are photos from that Farnborough Air Show. She retired from service with the Empire Test Pilot’s School in Farnborough and was later civilianised by none other than Hawker Siddeley who recognised the significance of this particular plane. And when you see Chipmunk WB549 today she has been lovingly and faithfully restored with her 1950s colour scheme which is just lovely to see. Having spent some years in storage it’s a real treat to have this plane flying again. A carefully selected group of the UK’s highest calibre pilots have been chosen as custodians of de Havilland DHC-1 Chipmunk WB549 so you’ll be in safe hands during these nostalgic Chipmunk flights. As well as being in a very special Chipmunk these flights are operated from a very special location too. Your Chipmunk plane will be parked up in front of the Art Deco control tower at Bicester Heritage. A pretty much perfect setting for a flight in such a historical aircraft as this 1949 Chipmunk. We are offering a full range of Chipmunk flights from Bicester and if it turns out that you’re a bit of an adventurous type the pilot may well execute a little sequence of aerobatic manoeuvres. That means you too can experience the moves all those young trainee pilots did in this much-loved smooth-flying Chipmunk.
